At present, fertilizer application is mostly done manually in rice production in Vietnam. Thus, the uniform application of fertilizer is laborious and difficult. 

Using an adaptive research platform of the IRRI Closing the Rice Yield Gaps Project (CORIGAP) in collaboration with Lehner Agrar GmbH and Center for Agricultural Energy and Machinery (CAEM), Nong Lam University, we conducted a field testing of a mechanical fertilizer spreader in Vinh Thanh District, Can Tho City, Vietnam. The study aimed to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of using a fertilizer spreader machine as compared to manual fertilizer application in the Mekong Delta. For the first cropping season, the results showed that fertilizer spreading was more uniform when applied using a fertilizer spreader as compared to manual method. The application rate is adjustable from 75 to 200 kg/ha, depending on the need of actual rate. The fertilizer spreader performed at an average capacity of 4 ha/h in muddy field condition in Mekong Delta. The use of the mechanical fertilizer spreader contributed to reduction in labor cost without effect on rice yield and farmers’ income, and protection of the health of operators and farmers, which are key indicators of sustainable rice production practices.
